Every now and again something arrives at the practice that stops us in our tracks. One morning last week, one of our much-loved patients, now 70 years old, brought in a small but wonderful piece of Tyrrells & Embery history.
Tucked safely inside her handbag was an original postcard sent to her when she was just 11 years old by our founder, Mr Ernest C. Tyrrell, letting her know that her new spectacles were ready to collect.

An original postcard from Mr Tyrrell letting our patient know her glasses were ready – a true blast from the past!
Our patient has kept that postcard safe for nearly six decades and has remained loyal to us ever since. She told us how much it meant to her family that Mr Tyrrell took the time to communicate directly and how it set the tone for the caring service she still receives today at Tyrrells & Embery.
Stories like these remind us why we do what we do. The technology, frames and lenses may have changed dramatically since 1960s Blackburn but our commitment to personal service, continuity of care and genuine relationships with our patients remains exactly the same.
If you’ve been with us for years, or if you’re just thinking about booking your first eye examination, know that at Tyrrells & Embery you’re joining a tradition of care that stretches back generations.
