Low Vision Service

According the ‘Future Sight Loss’ report (RNIB 2008) there are currently around 1.8 million people living with sight loss in the UK.  Sight loss can be due to a number of different conditions including macula degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

At Tyrrells and Embery, we are accredited to offer a Low Vision Service to Patients who are suffering from visual loss.  The service would be at no cost to yourself as it is funded by the NHS.  To be eligible, your registered GP must be based in Blackburn with Darwen or East Lancashire.  The Low Vision service offers adults with sight loss quicker access to a Low Vision Assessment and support closer to home.  If during the assessment, a Low Vision Aid is found to be of benefit to you, we will loan that appliance to you on behalf of the NHS low vision service.

Examples of common Low Vision solutions we prescribe;

  • Illuminated hand magnifiers – general reading

  • Chest magnifiers – for handicraft

  • Distance monocular telescopes – to be able to see bus numbers etc

  • TV magnifiers

  • Glare shields
